Central Congregational Church Fire
The original Central Congregational Church at the end of Seaverns avenue burned in 1935. This photo comes from the BPL Flickr group. I've already posts about Central Congregational here and here.
Today, at a meeting of the Jamaica Plain Historical Society, it was mentioned that this church was built of stone. I looked up the building in the Boston Globe archives. First, the date of the fire was Dec. 28, 1934 (not 1935). Second, the Globe article about the fire (printed on that date) described the building as a "wooden landmark." That it was a wooden building is consistent with it being colored yellow on fire insurance maps: yellow signifies wood. I didn't know this building and was glad to learn of its existence; it was beautiful and an excellent imitation of stone construction. Pity it burned down.
